The most savvy thing that America’s TV networks could possibly do this year is to promote Gary Johnson with the intent of placing him in at least one, if not all of the Fall presidential debates. Such a move would almost certainly drive viewership and interest in the debates to stratospheric levels, and Johnson’s penchant for snappy redirects and crowd-winning zingers would be the kind of fan service that scratches the itch for spontaneous, unscripted reality TV.

There is no shortage of love lost between CNN and the libertarian presidential candidate, former two term New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson, nor is it a secret. The cable news network continues to remain a thorn in his side (for about a year now), carefully and quietly excluding Johnson from its polling.

One small ray of hope emerged on August 29, 2011 when CNN finally included him in their bi-weekly national poll. Apparently Gov. Johnson polled a bit too high at 2%, and his name was never to be seen on all subsequent polls during his remaining tenure in the Republican primary.

Libertarian Party presidential candidate Gary Johnson is making a comeback in the polls, gaining some popularity since his failed bid for the Republican nomination last year.

Johnson is polling at 5.3 percent, according to a poll last week by JZ Analytics. “That’s a big deal,” Johnson told Capitol Report New Mexico. “We’re at 5 [percent] today, we could get to 7 tomorrow because people will check it out.”

President Obama’s lead is shrinking in New Mexico, according to a new poll from the Democratic-affiliated Public Policy Polling. Obama leads Mitt Romney by 49 to 44 percent, a dip from the solid 14-point lead he’d had earlier in the year when PPP polled the state in April.

When former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson is included in the poll, Obama leads Romney by 42 to 38 percent. Johnson, who pulls 13 percent support, is running on the Libertarian Party ticket.
