October 16, 2012

PolicyMic

By Jake Horowitz

Johnson only has small support nationwide in the presidential polls, but he enjoys a dedicated following of young people and former Ron Paul supporters, enough to actually make a difference in election 2012. He is on the ballot in almost every state (not Michigan or Oklahoma), so he has the potential to have a major impact on either Obama or Romney’s chances.

October 19, 2012

Reason.com

By Ronald Bailey

Not exactly, but more closely than one might expect. The producers of Planet Money are running a terrific series in which they asked a panel of economists whose views span the political spectrum what policies they think the perfect presidential candidate should adopt. It turns out that a lot of them echo the policy proposals of Libertarian Party presidential candidate Gary Johnson.

The campaign for Gary Johnson, a Libertarian presidential candidate, touts his agenda for the U.S. as putting a stop to frivolous spending, ending wars and rebuilding America.

The former two-term New Mexico governor stood before a crowd Thursday night at the University of Wyoming wearing a T-shirt with a peace symbol on the front and surrounded by signs describing him as “the people’s president.”

October 22, 2012

Denver Westword

Frightened Republicans Try To Shut Down Election Competitors

October 22, 2012

Forbes

By Doug Bandow

The Republican Party claims to believe in freedom. But not really. Certainly not if that means being able to vote for someone who truly believes in liberty.

Former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson, a Republican who cut spending while advocating legalization of marijuana, originally ran for the GOP presidential nomination. But most of the debate organizers refused to let him join the largely undistinguished candidate herd which included another unknown former governor (Jon Huntsman) and a businessman with no political experience (Herman Cain).

The talk show host, who is moderating the Free & Equal Elections Foundation’s independent candidate debate, said he thinks any candidate who is on the ballot in at least 40 states should be invited to all the major sanctioned debates.

How to make signs for Gary Johnson Sign Waving Day!

In Uncategorized on October 19, 2012 at 9:16 pm

Today is Nationwide Gary Johnson Sign-Waving Day… And You’re Invited!
Gary Johnson supporters from coast to coast are invited to theNationwide Gary Johnson Sign-Waving Day, TODAY, October 19th.
We’ve already held three Sign-Waving Days so far and have received hundreds of pictures; we believe that today will be our biggest and most successful day yet!
However, we know a number of you have had questions about how to make signs, so we’ve included suggestions on how to have a successful Sign-Waving Day.
Please make sure to:

  • CampaignTrailPics.

HOW TO MAKE A GARY JOHNSON SIGN

Sign Material

  • Coroplast White (Plastic Cardboard)
  • 4mm Gauge, 48″x96″ Sheets
  • One sheet makes four 24″x48″ signs.
  • When you cut, make sure the ribs follow the long direction of the sign. That way it’s stronger and the cut is easier.
  • Check sign shops and similar stores.

What to Write With?

  • We buy “Glass Chalk” in Walmart’s automotive section. Get both Red and Black.

Lay Them Out To Dry!

  • If you make mistakes, you can erase with rubbing alcohol and fix it.
  • You’re almost ready for your sign rally. The next step is finding your best location. We’ll cover that next.

Be Creative

  • Cardboard, paint, stickers, chalk… anything will work!
  • The most important part is that your sign is visible from a distance.

SELECTING YOUR RALLY LOCATION

Traffic Volume Maps

  • The first thing you’ll need is a Traffic Volume Map.
  • Many areas have these available online. Search “My City/County Traffic Volume Map”
  • Find the streets with the highest Traffic Numbers and choose two or three as possibilities.

Location Scouting

  • Now we have to scout our locations. Suitable locations need to be:
  • Safe. Make sure there’s a sidewalk or a wide median to stand on.
  • Clear. You don’t want too many trees, driveways, or other obstacles that will interfere with your position.
  • Make sure you’ll be on the right side of the road to face the heavy traffic. This will be opposite for morning and afternoon.
  • Avoid having your back to the sun if possible.
  • Try to be present during morning traffic or afternoon traffic, if possible.

Distance of SIgns

  • Your signs will be separated 40 steps apart from each other.
  • Your first sign should be at least 20-40 steps from the nearest corner. Count it out and find that spot.
  • Is that a safe place with a clear view of traffic?
  • Repeat until you know that you can place up to seven volunteers safely.
  • Make sure there’s adequate parking for all of your volunteers.
  • Leave any prime parking to retail stores if they need it.
  • Now you’re ready for your sign rally!

RUNNING YOUR SIGN RALLY EVENT

Volunteers

  • Recruiting and encouraging volunteers is your most important job.
  • Passionate volunteers are what make this campaign different.
  • This is very rewarding work for volunteers. Once they get out there and see the response, they will recognize the impact you’re making.
  • As people sign up, invite them to invite their friends.

Before the Sign Rally

  • Start calling and inviting volunteers as soon as you have a location.
  • Call all of your volunteers if possible. Confirm and encourage those who’ve agreed to be there, and invite the rest one last time.
  • Email is a good follow up and reminder of details, but it does not replace the phone calls.

Timing

  • Time your rallies to meet morning and afternoon traffic. You’ll reach more people, and they’ll have more time to read your signs.
  • Keep your rallies to about one hour each. This shows respect for your volunteer’s time, and will help to ensure you don’t wear them out.

Rally Time!

  • Arrive at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. If you aren’t there, volunteers will not always wait for you.
  • Use sidewalk chalk to mark locations for your volunteers to stand.
  • Place the first mark according to the location scouting document.
  • Make a solid circle about the size of the palm of your hand with a “1” next to it.
  • Walk forty normal steps and make number two the same way. Mark all seven locations even if you’re expecting fewer people. You never know who’ll show up.
  • Your volunteers are the most important part of this event by far. The signs are a distant second.
  • You’ll need to coach and encourage your volunteers as they arrive, and throughout the event.

Sign holders should:

  • Smile and wave! Their smile is by far their best asset.
  • Look into the car and smile at the driver – hold the sign still.
  • They don’t need to spin or wiggle the sign. People will see it.
  • Stay on their location. Many will want to pace a little, but keep them within a few feet of their assigned mark.
  • Hold their sign at a right angle to the street. This is the best angle for drivers to see it.

Good luck waving your Gary Johnson signs! Don’t forget to send your pictures to CampaignTrailPics.

GOV. GARY JOHNSON APPLAUDS FEDERAL APPEALS RULING THAT DEFENSE OF MARRIAGE ACT IS UNCONSTITUTIONAL

Oct. 18, 2012, Laramie, WY — Calling it “another major step toward ending marriage discrimination,” presidential candidate and former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson today applauded a Federal Appeals Court ruling in New York that the Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as only between a man and a woman, is unconstitutional.

In a statement, Johnson said, “Unlike Gov. Romney and President Obama, I firmly believe marriage equality for gay couples is a constitutionally protected right under the Equal Protection Clause. Today’s ruling by the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals confirms that belief and is a major step toward eliminating the discrimination that is enshrined in the Defense of Marriage Act.

“While, as a former Governor, I am a staunch defender of states’ rights, when it comes to marriage equality, it is not good enough to hide behind the idea of deferring to state law, as President Obama has done. Gay Americans will either be treated equally under the Constitution, or they will not. That is not a matter to be left to the states. With today’s ruling, I am more confident than ever that the U.S. Supreme Court will ultimately resolve the issue of gay marriage on the side of equality.”

About presidential candidate Gary Johnson: Gary Johnson, two-term governor of New Mexico from 1995-2003, has been a consistent advocate for limited, efficient government and personal liberty. Johnson switched from the Republican Party to the Libertarian Party on Dec. 28, 2011. As the Libertarian Party nominee, Johnson will appear on all 50 states’ ballots. An outspoken pro-Constitution Libertarian, Johnson would end the war in Afghanistan now. He opposes the failed multi-billion dollar war on drugs and demands greater transparency at the Federal Reserve. As president, Johnson would cut federal spending by 43 percent, slash debt and make government live within its means while reducing taxes and regulation to foster real job creation and economic opportunity like he did in eight years as governor. The National Review said he was “#1” in job creation as governor. An avid skier and bicyclist, he has reached the highest peaks on four of the seven continents, including Mount Everest.

Libertarian presidential nominee Gov. Gary Johnson released the following statement in response to Tuesday night’s debate:

America’s challenges and the crises we face demand a real debate – not dueling Phil Donahue acts carping at one another over who is worse.

I defy anyone who watched the debate to identify a plan from either the Republican or Democrat that will achieve a balanced budget. Behind the fuzzy math and the quibbling, there was nothing more than a commitment to continue the status quo – with at most a few minor adjustments. We don’t need adjustments. We need a fundamental reduction in the role and cost of government, and both Romney and Obama are fundamentally big-government guys.

We watched a blame game over immigration, while the problem festers with no solution in sight. We heard quibbling over whose government plan would have saved GM better, but nothing about why the government should be bailing out any company at all. And we heard cheap shots about government-run health care from two candidates who both support it. Where is the reasonable argument that government shouldn’t be running health care in the first place?

On the attacks in Libya, the debate we must have is not over what we call it or when; we need a debate over why we were there at all.

There are clear choices in this election, but they weren’t on the stage tonight.

Now is the time for us to “Unite for Liberty!”

Gary Johnson Sign-Waving Day, October 10th & 12th

Gary Johnson supporters from coast to coast are invited to the Nationwide Gary Johnson Sign-Waving Day, on Wednesday, October 10th AND Friday, October 12th. Grab your Gary Johnson signs, find a busy street corner in your home town, and wave your support for Liberty!

Now is the time to get as much exposure as we can. We want this to be a huge, coast-to-coast event! Invite your friends, bring food, and have fun! The nationwide Gary Johnson Sign-Waving Day will work as follows:

    • Pick a high traffic area, like a downtown street corner at rush hour. Alternately, you can hang homemade banners and signs on highway overpasses.
    • Create an event on Facebook to organize a time and place to meet in your area. Try to have a number of locations across your city or state!
    • Wave yard signs, posters, any homemade signs you’d like, and make noise, noise, noise!
    • Please take pictures of your sign-waving event and share these pictures to social media!

As an added bonus, we ask everyone to email their creative pictures from nationwide Gary Johnson Sign-Waving Day to CampaignTrailPics.

The best, most creative pictures will be used in an official campaign video, and will be shared on Gov. Johnson’s social media!

So get out there, make some signs, and make some noise!

There Is No Libertarian Case For Mitt Romney

October 1, 2012
United Liberty
By Doug Mataconis

Stephen Green, PJMedia’s Vodkapundit, came out this morning with a post putting forward a libertarian case for Mitt Romney. I’ve seen several other people try to attempt to make this argument in the last several weeks, but they’ve all been conservatives trying to convince libertarians why they absolutely must vote for Mitt Romney rather than Gary Johnson on November 6th.

Inevitably, those arguments, whether in the form of a blog post or a conversation on Twitter or Facebook end up devolving into the same ridicule and condescension one typically hears from conservatives directed at libertarians.

The Raw Story
By Stephen C. Webster

Appearing at a town hall event in Salt Lake City on Tuesday night, Libertarian Party presidential candidate Gary Johnson was asked if he’d like to go crowd surfing. And without any hesitation, he agreed.

As cameras rolled, the former New Mexico governor turned his back on the crowd and let them pick him up, being carried around the room for a moment before touching back down.

October 3, 2012
PolicyMic
By Christopher McDaniel

Election 2012 has a make-or-break feel for the GOP. We’ve seen Ron Paul’s R3VOLution in the party all across America. With a volatile primary season behind him, Mitt Romney is looking to show indy-leaning Republicans and the rest of America that he is the better man to lead America for the next four years.

On Wednesday, he gets his first chance as he goes head to head with President Barack Obama in the first of three televised debates brought to you by the Commission for Presidential Debates.

Let Gary Johnson Eat Cake (and Debate)

October 4, 2012
The Huffington Post
By Brian LaSorsa

Mitt Romney and Barack Obama took the stage Wednesday night at the 2012 election cycle’s first presidential debate, and they made it clear beforehand: libertarian candidate Gary Johnson ain’t invited.

In response, Johnson actually filed an antitrust lawsuit charging the RNC and DNC with conspiring in restraint of trade to exclude the consideration of third-party candidates in these nationally televised exchanges. No one knows what will come of the lawsuit, and I’m still not sure whether to laugh at the Libertarian Party or laugh with them.

Gary Johnson and the 2-party stranglehold on presidential debates

October 4, 2012
Newsday
By Lane Filler

We are a two-party system — not by law, but because the Democrats and the Republicans have seized the mechanisms of government. They use their control to maintain power, and other parties can’t compete. This causes a bunch of self-perpetuating, corrosive behaviors, like government-funded primaries for these major parties, which are really nothing but private organizations.

Withholding the money for a Republican primary out of a libertarian’s paycheck makes as much sense as taxing Jews to pay for KKK dance parties (now that’s an idea for a reality show).

Third party candidates may have outsized impact in tight race

October 5, 2012
Daily News
By The Associated Press

Third-party candidates Gary Johnson and Virgil Goode are blips in the presidential race. They have little money, aren’t on stage for presidential debates and barely register in the polls — when survey takers even bother to list them as options.

Yet in a tight race between Democratic President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney that likely will be won or lost at the margins, even blips can be a big deal.

Ron Paul Suggests He’ll Vote For Gary Johnson

October 5, 2012
BuzzFeed
By Rosie Gray

“Tonight there’s a debate going on,” Ron Paul said. “And if you come to the conclusion that the candidates aren’t all that different, why do we have to just listen to two of them?”

“There are other people who are technically capable of winning because they’re on a lot of ballots,” Paul said, to which his interviewer said “Like Gary Johnson, for example.”

Legalizing marijuana: most Americans get it, so when will our politicians?

October 6, 2012
The Guardian
By Gov. Gary Johnson

Prohibition in the US was a huge, miserable failure. During its 13-year run, beginning in 1920, Prohibition caused a massive rise in organized crime and actually increased alcohol consumption instead of curtail it. After Prohibition’s repeal in 1933, kids didn’t start drinking in record numbers. Society didn’t collapse.

Today, bathtub gin dealers don’t run amok on playgrounds; microbreweries don’t protect their turf with automatic weapons. Instead, a safe environment to drink was created when the government began regulating and taxing alcohol. And yet, here we are in 2012, giving Prohibition another shot. For lack of a better word, that’s just stupid.

Presidential Polls 2012 Show Gary Johnson With 10 Percent of Vote in Ohio, Time for GOP to Take Him Seriously

October 8, 2012
PolicyMic
By David Allen

Reince Priebus, the Chairman of the Republican National Committee, appeared on CNN’s State of The Union. The host, Candy Crowley, asked whether Priebus was worried about libertarian candidate Gary Johnson taking votes from Mitt Romney.

The chairman responded that it doesn’t worry him because people are “not going to throw their vote away” and that Johnson was “almost a non-factor.” Which is all a part of the song and dance of being the Chairman of the Republican National Committee (but it hides a real worry).
